Motorcyclist rapes two-year-old, assaults pregnant aunt

The police have arrested a 30-year-old motorcycle rider, Garuba Abdulraman, for allegedly defiling a two-year-old, Pat, (pseudonym) in the Somolu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Abdulraman, an indigene of Niger State, also kicked the minor’s pregnant aunty, Alimat Muazu, when the later quizzed him on the child’s whereabouts.

The incident happened on Saturday on Ofor Street.

A relative of the victim, who did not identify himself, said the family did a medical test on her and it was discovered that her hymen had been broken.

He added that the hospital subsequently placed her on medication.

He said, “It happened on Saturday, February 21, 2015 around 11.30am.

“Pat’s mother lives in Gbagada, while her sister, Muazu, stays at Somolu. She decided to visit Muazu that day.

“It was during the visit that the girl suddenly went missing and everybody started looking for her.

“But somebody said he sighted Abdulraman, a motorcyclist, taking her away. So, some women trailed the child to an uncompleted building where he lives. When they got there, they met him and he didn’t tell them where the child was.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that there was an exchange of words between the women and the suspect, and in the ensuing scuffle, the suspect kicked Muazu in the stomach.

He was also said to have threatened to use cutlass to hack them if they moved closer.

Our correspondent was told that Abdulraman dared the family to report to the police after which policemen from the Somolu Division were alerted.

A police source told our correspondent that a case of assault was reported at the station.

He said, “When we got there, we found the girl in one of the rooms, in a big bowl of water.

“She could barely move and when she tried, she fell down. She began to cry. We didn’t suspect anything until we saw that her pants and clothes had been washed and hung on the line to dry. The suspect was also not putting on any clothes.”

The police were said to have taken the victim to the hospital where it was confirmed that there was penetration.

Abdulraman was arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on four counts of rape and assault.

The suspect, who spoke through an interpreter to the court, confirmed that he assaulted Muazu and threatened to use cutlass on them.

He, however, denied raping the victim.

He said, “I don’t know these people from anywhere. I had gone to their compound when someone said he needed to buy plywoods.

“Pat came near my okada and started playing with it, and those people said I should help them carry her, which I did.

“After they finished buying the plywoods, they said they could still not carry her, because they had a lot of load to carry. They asked me to help them.

“It was while carrying her that she soiled her clothes and I decided to wash it for her. I never had sex with her.”

He added that he was forced to threaten the women with cutlass after they stoned him.

The police prosecutor, Richard Odige, told the court that the offence was punishable under sections 267, 137, 170 and 56 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria, 2011.

His defence counsel, F.S. Osordi, applied for bail, for the defendant, asking the court to overlook Abdulraman’s guilty plea to charges of assault and threat to injure with cutlass.

“I am not really sure he understood what he was saying because he told me a different thing before this court sat. We apply that the court should order that count three be read to him again,” he added.

The Chief Magistrate, O. I. Adelaja, however, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said, “The sureties must show proofs of employment, tax payment, and their addresses must be verified.”

The matter was adjourned till April 8, 2015.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Says, Any Social Media Account In His Name Are 'Fake'

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he does not have any accounts on any social media networks.

He said this in Abeokuta on Monday.Obasanjo was reacting to a twitter account, @newsvergeonline, which had posted a tweet on Sunday, claiming that the ex-President had described the Director of Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization, Femi Fani-Kayode, as a “democracy wrecker.”

He said the fake twitter account with his name, Olusegun A. Obasanjo, posted the story with caption:
‘Fani-Kayode is a democracy wrecker, who’s very fluent in stupidity. Give him food, and he will sing and doshokidance for you’.
Dismissing the twitter account, he explained that all his previous accounts on either Facebook or Twitter had long been blocked. Obasanjo said, “I don’t know where this comes from. I don’t have any account on either the Facebook or Twitter again. Go and block it.”

Obasanjo used the opportunity to caution those using his name to operate illegal social media accounts, warning that the security agencies had been placed on the alert to fish out the perpetrators.

He said, “Nemesis will catch up with anyone doing this. It is illegal and criminal. If I have to pass any message to the good people of Nigeria, I know how to go about it with no controversy.”

Nigerian military working to capture Boko Haram leader, Shekau, alive-Ibanga Isine

Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram leader
Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram leader
Following successes recorded in the war against Boko Haram in Nigeria’s North-East zone, the Armed Forces have intensified efforts to capture alive, the leader of the insurgent group, Abubakar Shekau.
Already, troops have been placed on alert to apprehend Mr. Shekau, who is said to be desperately trying to escape the warzone.
Military formations engaged in the war have been ordered to do everything in their power to capture Mr. Shekau alive in order for him to face justice; PR Nigeria, an agency that circulates press statements for Nigerian security agencies, quoted a senior military source as saying.
The order to capture the leader of insurgent group alive, PR Nigeria said, is borne out of the fact that on at least two different occasions, the military laid claims to killing Mr. Shekau and even flaunted videos just for the man to resurface and debunk the reports.
Mr. Shekau is, therefore, ordered to be taken alive to ensure that the military is no longer fooled by the gimmick of the insurgents.
Sources also told PR Nigeria that the rumour about Mr. Shekau’s invincibility is one of the factors that have made troops afraid to confront the terrorists.
But with the arrival of sophisticated armaments and the decision of top military brass to lead the onslaught against the terrorists, the troops’ morale has been greatly boosted.
Intelligence sources told PR Nigeria that the reclaiming of key towns in the North-East was due to deployment of new strategies, new equipment, improved discipline, and sincerity of the force fighting the insurgents.
In the past, colonels were said to have led direct attacks in accordance with military tradition but because of the large scale desertions recorded, generals decided to directly lead the war.
“It was even learnt that many of the troops that earlier deserted have returned while others have expressed desire to return to the front,” a source told PR Nigeria.
“With acquisition of new equipment from various sources and the specialized training of the troops on guerrilla warfare, the military indirectly called the bluff of some deceptive western countries who are now trying to save face by claiming to work with our neighbours.
“The effective collaboration and mutual relationship with our neighbours is paying off as they now realise that inactions can pose disasters to their countries too,” the source was quoted as saying.
President Goodluck Jonathan had on Saturday vowed that the Federal Government would regain parts of the country seized by the Boko Haram terror group.
Mr. Jonathan gave the assurance when he paid a courtesy visit to traditional rulers in Epe, near Lagos.
“I have made all the tools and machineries available to fight Boko Haram. I want to ensure that Boko Haram will not disturb or cause any violence during the forthcoming elections,’’ Mr. Jonathan told the monarchs.
PREMIUM TIMES had reported Saturday how a large number of terrorists drowned in the Lake Chad as they fled the heavy bombardment by Nigerian Air Force heralding the advance of Nigerian troops on a mission to flush them out of Baga.
“Not even the strategy of mining over 1500 spots with land mines on the routes leading to the town could save the terrorists from the aggressive move of advancing troops,” the Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, a Major General, said in a statement.
He added, “All the land mines were skillfully cleared one after the other. Eventually, the resistance of the terrorists collapsed and the land forces finally stormed the town in the early hours of Friday.
“Many of the terrorists died while an unknown but substantial number of them fled with various degrees of injury, in the series of encounter along the routes of advance as troops headed for Baga.
“Apart from the 5 anti aircraft guns and the rifles captured from the terrorists, over 34 motorcycles and 5 vehicles including trucks being used for operations by the terrorists were destroyed in the course of the fighting as troops headed for Baga. The troops finally began clearing the terrorists from Baga on arrival in the town early Saturday morning.
“A comprehensive cordon and search phase of military operation has now commenced to enable troops mop up arms and ammunition and also apprehend any terrorist who might be hiding in the vicinity.
“The exercise will also determine details of the casualties inflicted or incurred in the course of the operations to clear Baga and environ of terrorists.
“Similar exercise is being carried out in over 12 locations namely Gajigana, Ngaze, Ngenzai, Marte Junction, Mile 90, Yoyo, Kekeno, Kukawa, Cross Kauwa, Kangarwa, Amirari and other localities where troops have flushed out the terrorists in the operations preceding the entry to Baga. The troops are now dominating and conducting aggressive patrols in the locations. The morale of troops remains high.”

Jonathan in desperate move to stop his defeat by Buhari

Alarmed by seeming soaring popularity of Muhammadu Buhari, his main opponent in the March 28 election, President Goodluck Jonathan may have decided to personally coordinate his campaigns for the strategic presidential election, which has already drawn global attention.

Jonathan is very uncomfortable with field reports that he would have been defeated by Buhari of the APC, if the election had been held on February 14 as earlier planned by INEC.

To stem the tide of the perceived “Buhari momentum” and tilt the pendulum in his favour, Jonathan, has opted to drive some aspects of his campaign by himself by meeting relevant political groups and individuals considered very important for his victory.

Jonathan hits the road personally...
A source close to the new thinking in the Presidency, said that Jonathan had come to the realization that it would be better for him to be personally involved in the new phase of campaign instead of relying on emissaries, some of who have not “delivered” despite being appropriately empowered to do so.

Ignores party chieftains in Lagos
Indeed, Jonathan’s visit to Lagos beginning from Wednesday did not include elders of the party in the state.

As part of his visit itinerary, he met with market women without any indication as of press time that he would hold meeting with PDP leaders and elders in the state with the state leader of the party, Chief Bode George said to be away in England.

A chieftain of the party, who believes that the President has not carried the state party structure along in his quest to woo and win the state, Mr. Lukman Abioro, wondered why people like Chief Bode George, General Tajudeen Olanrewaju and others were not part of the visit.

Another leader, who spoke under anonymity said, “Mr. President has done well enough for Nigeria but I think he can be more comfortable as second term President if he wins in Lagos. But he has been in the same Lagos for the past three days and we are not carried along.”

Poor performing aides
The President was said to have been rattled by the discovery that many of the party leaders, who had assured him that they were fully in charge of their states and would deliver them to him, were far from delivering on their promise barely a few weeks to the crucial election.

Apart from the field reports, which were being sent regularly to him from each state, the president was said to have come face to face with the reality of the state of support for him when he visited the respective states to campaign.

A top source said that what the president saw in many of the PDP states, which gave him massive support in 2011, was far from encouraging and he decided to take an urgent step to salvage the situation instead of waiting for any of the governors or so-called political leaders from the zones.

“That is why the President is in Lagos to be able to woo as many South-West leaders and supporters as possible. I can tell you that although he went to Lagos officially to commission the four new war ships acquired for the Nigerian Navy, the underlying reason is to spend more time in the South-West and meet with relevant political entities and individuals who can help him out,” a source in the Presidency said.

It was learned that unlike before when aides of the president spearheaded meetings and discussions with those considered germane to his re-election, Jonathan will personally meet with key traditional rulers, top businessmen, community leaders and even former party leaders, who had defected to the opposition and could be swayed to work for him anywhere he visits from now.

Already, Jonathan’s personal touch approach is said to have started yielding dividends with a host of some Yoruba leaders drumming support for him.

Unhappy with attacks on Danjuma
The source said that the president was also worried about the recent verbal attacks on General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) by Nigeria Delta militants, fearing that the man, who personally rallied northern Christians and leaders for him in 2011, could be provoked by the insults to work against his re-election.

To visit Danjuma, Northern leaders
For that reason, Jonathan is said to have made up his mind to visit Danjuma and other northern leaders to personally plead with them to see reasons to still stand by him as they did in the last presidential election, which he won with ease.

A prominent northern leader told Vanguard that the assault on Danjuma by the former Niger-Delta militants did not go down well with most northerners, who have now decided to work against Jonathan, to retaliate the unwarranted attack on one of their leading lights.

Feuding media team
These developments came in the wake of alleged squabble among the President’s Campaign Media team. The media team was said to have performed poorly prompting recent appointments. Still the team has incurred the wrath of some presidential aides for allegedly paying more attention to attacking personalities in the opposition rather than zeroing in on issues that could rake more support for Jonathan.

It was not clear as at last night if some changes were in the offing to sharpen the campaign team and elicit more support for the president as the date for the election draws nearer.

5-Year-Old Boy Who Claims He Lived Past Life As Woman Who Died In A Chicago Fire, Proves It

o-LUKE-570

Luke Ruehlman is a healthy 5-year-old boy. Yet, he’s already had a lifetime of experiences according to him — he has even died! The Huffington Post reports:

At least, that’s what he claims. In a bizarre series of TV interviews, Ruehlman has managed to convince at least a few people that he lived a past life as Pam Robinson, an African-American Chicago woman who died in a fire at the Paxton Hotel in 1993.

Ruehlman started weirding out his stay-at-home mom, Erika, at the age of 2, when he started talking about a mystery woman named Pam. Later, she would ask him directly who the heck Pam was. “He turned to me and said, ‘Well, I was,'” she told Fox 8 . “[He said] ‘Well, I used to be, but I died and I went up to heaven. I saw God and then eventually, God pushed me back down and I was a baby and you named me Luke.'”

Ruehlman also reportedly said he traveled by train in Chicago. The Cincinnati family didn’t know anyone named Pam, and Luke had never been to the Windy City. His mom was baffled. She investigated further and found Pam Robinson, who was one of 19 people who died in a 1993 hotel fire.

Robinson’s family declined to comment on the story. The boy’s odd ability to remember places he’s never been is intriguing, to be sure. If this sounds amazing, it’s not that unusual on the show that revealed this story, Lifetime’s “Ghost Inside My Child” — and the last time we checked up on one of the show’s reports, it was a mess   Culled from The Huffington Post

1
A total of 158 Women and children abducted by Boko Haram insurgents from Katarko village in Yobe have been reunited with their families in Damaturu, Yobe.
The victims were released by the sect members after three weeks of captivity. Alhaji Ahmed Goniri, the state Commissioner for Justice and Chairman of the State Committee on Rehabilitation of Victims of Insurgency, said this while addressing newsmen in Damaturu on Thursday.
“The victims were screened by security operatives to authenticate their status while government provided them with psychological therapy to ease their trauma,” Goniri said.
NAN reports that the victims were released by the insurgents three weeks ago but remained in custody of security agencies to undergo screening to ensure that they were indeed captives. Alhaji Abdurahman Dauda, a displaced person, said his wife and six girls were released by the insurgents.
“Two of my boys are still in their custody but, I am of high spirit that they will soon be rescued,” he said. One of the victims who preferred to remain anonymous, said’ “to be fair to the insurgents, they did not rape or abused us, they simply asked those who were not interested in their religion to leave, and they eventually released us”.
Meanwhile, the state government has provided N50,000, two bags of rice, sugar, noodles and wrapper to each of the 15 widows among the victims, while 47 other women received N30,000 each and same quantity of rice, sugar, noodles and wrapper. He said 20 boys were still in custody of the insurgents and expressed hope that the renewed operation against the insurgents would rescue them from their captors.

Obasanjo Speaks On Why He Tore His PDP Membership Card At Last

(null)
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a phone interview with Premium Times has explained why he ‘tore’ his PDP membership card. I wanted to summarize it before, but then you might miss some certain interesting part, luckily for you, it’s not a long report. I kinda like this man, don’t know why. Lol. Find the interview after the cut.
As criticisms and commendations continue to trail his dramatic exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained how he arrived at the decision to dump the party to which he belonged for 16 years.
The former president had Monday announced his resignation as a member of the party on whose platform he ruled the country between 1999 and 2007.
Mr. Obasanjo renounced his membership of the PDP when some leaders of the party led by Surajudeen Oladunjoye, the chairman of the ward around his former residence in Ita Eko, visited him at his Presidential Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta home.
The former president directed Mr. Oladunjoye to tear his membership card at a press conference organised during the visit.
About two hours later, the PDP leadership in Ogun State announced the expulsion of the former president from the party.
However, in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday, Mr. Obasanjo explained that the PDP members visited him to express their genuine concern about his refusal to be active in the party.
“They were concerned that I had only one leg in the party, and worried that since I’m their leader in the ward, they need to hear from me,” the former President said.
According to him, when the party members arrived his residence, they were singing a song in Yoruba language – “Nigeria yi ti gbobgo wa ni, Ko ma gbodo ba je. Eje ka sowopo kajo gbega (Meaning – Nigeria belongs to all of us, we must not allow it to be destroyed and we must join hands to make it great).
Mr. Obasanjo said when they settled down he sought to know why they came and that it was at that point that Mr. Oladunjoye told him that since he (Obasanjo) as their leader became angry with the PDP and remained inactive in the party, they had not only lost sense of direction but also worried about their political future.
He also said the party members informed him that the leadership in the state was planning to expel him and that they wondered what would happen to them if he was expelled because they would become rudderless.
“You are our leader and it is you we are following. You have remained a card-carrying member of the the party. But since you became angry with the party we have lost sense of direction and now we are hearing that they want to expel you. If they expel you, where do we go? What do we do?” Mr. Obasanjo quoted the ward chairman as saying.
The former president explained that it was at that point that he gave them his PDP membership card and told them that they could do whatever they want with it.
He said, “In my response, I said when you people came you were singing a song and I agreed that Nigeria is our own. If the issue is the party, I will not choose the party at the detriment of Nigeria and I will fight for Nigeria even at the detriment of the party. I will rather surrender my membership of the party so you people can move on politically,” Mr. Obasanjo explained to Premium Times.
“If you people’s worry is that I’m a card-carrying member of the party and I’m not showing you people direction and you are worried that I’m neither here nor there, this is the card; you can keep it, you can burn it or you can tear it, do whatever you want to do with it.”
The former president said he then handed over his membership card to Mr. Oladunjoye, who immediately decided on his own to shred it.
Mr. Obasanjo said he had no regrets for his action despite the criticisms that have greeted it.

Poll shift: We’re in extra-time, says Buhari

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), on Tuesday likened the remaining weeks to the 2015 elections to extra-time in football.

He enjoined party leaders, supporters and members to avoid mistakes that could cost the party the elections by remaining resilient because their patience would be tested in the days ahead.

Buhari said this at the Joint Leaders’ Meeting of the party, held at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

According to him, he alongside leaders of the party travelled the length and breadth of this country, and had heard the cry for change which had become a common refrain among Nigerians.

He noted that it was common knowledge that the country was passing through trying times “which was imposed on us by the bad Peoples Democratic Party administration.”

Buhari said, “The imminent change in answer to the yearnings of our people has been delayed by the postponement of the February 14, 2015 elections.

“Our patience and resilience will be tested in the days ahead. We must pass this test.

“In a time like this, which in football analogy can be referred to as extra-time; we must avoid making costly mistakes. In the weeks ahead, I would like to implore you to remain true to the vision – to build a country that works for all of us and not just for the few.

“To rescue and stabilise our nation from the hands of plunderers. On this, I believe we all agreed.

“The important issue today is that we must use the next six weeks that have been imposed on us to re-charge and re-focus on our goal. The goal is to win the elections now slated for March 28 and April 11 with a convincing majority.”

The APC candidate enjoined party members to aim for and achieve a victory that would be beyond dispute and proceed to form the next government and start work on the task of rebuilding our beloved country.

He maintained that the objective of an APC-led government was “to build a great society that works for all, a country where every child has an equal opportunity to get an education, where every young Nigerian who needs a job can find one and where the sick are looked after and senior citizens are provided for.

“And most importantly, a country which gives value to human life, where the welfare and security of all is a national priority and corruption is defeated.”

In his first reaction to the alleged use of soldiers to rig the Ekiti governorship elections, Buhari described the revelations made by Captain Sagir Koli as “worrisome.”

He also said the fact that there had yet to be an official denial of the most unfortunate event, “makes me wonder, in the circumstances that led to shifting of the date of the Federal elections, whether the security services are even now being prepared to play a similar role in the March 28 and April 11 elections.”

The retired General enjoined Nigeria’s security services to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities to Nigerians and to avoid the temptation of allowing themselves to be dragged into partisan politics.

While stating that he had tremendous respect for the security services, he enjoined the hierarchy of the military to stick to and concentrate on their constitutional duties to avoid further complicating our national situation.

Buhari commended members of the APC for making the requisite sacrifices which culminated in the momentum, which he said, the party was enjoying.

Earlier, a prominent leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had likened milestones recorded by the APC within its short lifespan to bringing down the Berlin Wall.

He specifically expressed gratitude to Buhari for leading the party to avoid the booby trap set by the PDP.

Tinubu said, “We have to be further vigilant. Thank God that our presidential candidate is now more democratic and more obedient than ever before. The booby trap set was for our supporters to react (to the postponement) violently so that they will declare a state of emergency but he (Buhari) led us from that trap.

“The PDP government is desperate to cling to power; we are determined to take power from tyrants. No one will serve you power, the determination is yours. We know now that they have been unable to achieve the violent booby trap.”

Tinubu congratulated the Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for finding a “panacea for the PDP rigging machine” in Osun State. He said the party could benefit from his experience in the general elections.

The Director of the APC Presidential Campaign Council and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who gave a rundown of the party’s campaign so far, urged party members to pay attention to the polling booth because “that is where rigging starts from.”

A top member of the ruling party has told punch that, the claims made recently by former president Olusegun Obasanjo that Buhari might jail President Jonathan if he gets into power is real and they all know. Below is how Punch reports it.
The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential candidate, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) may meet before the March 28 presidential elections.
The Punch gathered on Sunday that the meeting which might hold outside the country was to establish rapport between the two contenders before the election.
A source close to the Presidency said, “We are trying to broker a meeting between the two leaders.
“The way the presidential electioneering is going may create serious divisions among Nigerians. We need to stop this.
“Apart from this, I think there is serious apprehension in the camp of the President that if Buhari wins, he’s going to jail a lot of President Jonathan’s supporters for alleged corruption.
“This is one of the issues that is causing serious tension in the camp of the President and we also need to make sure that in whatever we do, there must be peace in the country.”
It was learnt that the claim by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that Jonathan was afraid that Buhari could jail him was real after all.
A top member of the ruling PDP, who also spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity said, this fact could not be denied by the party and the Presidency.
He said, “You have listened to the press conference by our campaign office and we didn’t deny that aspect. But we dealt with other issues.
“That statement by former President Obasanjo is real. It is true and we all know that. But we know that very soon, the meeting which we are hearing is being coordinated by some concerned leaders, might address that.”
Obasanjo had on Saturday said, ‘‘I believe the President’s fear is particularly motivated by whom he sees as his likely successor, that is, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. I believe people would have been telling him that Buhari is a hard man; he will fight corruption and he (Jonathan) may end up in jail if not in the grave. I think people would have told him that sort of thing and he is not the only one afraid of Buhari.’’

Presidency accuses OBJ of plotting political crisis in order to an head interim government

Following his recent public remarks about the GEJ-led government, the Presidency has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of plotting a political crisis in Nigeria with the intention of forming an interim government which he hopes to head. In a statement released this night by Presidential media aide, Reuben Abati, the presidency accused the former president of sowing seeds of discords among Nigerians so that he could come back into power through the back door. Find the statement after the cut...

We find the false claims and allegations reportedly made against President Goodluck Jonathan by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday in Abeokuta very odious and repugnant.

As we have had cause to say before, it is most regrettable indeed that a man like Chief Obasanjo, who should know better, chooses to repeatedly, wantonly, and maliciously impugn the integrity of a sitting President of his country for the primary purpose of self-promotion.

It is obvious from Chief Obasanjo’s serial vituperations against President Jonathan who is doing his best to positively transform Nigeria for the benefit of all of its people that he has willfully chosen to close his eyes to the present administration’s good works and intentions. For reasons best known to him, Chief Obasanjo has set his mind on regime change by fair or foul means.

Otherwise, it would be completely senseless, irrational and out of place for Chief Obasanjo, who still claims to belong to the same party as the President, to accuse President Jonathan of plotting to win the rescheduled presidential elections by “hook or crook” and planning to plunge the nation into crisis if he loses the election.

For the record, President Jonathan has no such intention and will continue to give the greatest possible support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant federal agencies to ensure that the rescheduled elections are successfully conducted.

Indeed, it is not President Jonathan who remains faithful to his oath of office who is trying to plunge Nigeria into crisis, but Chief Obasanjo who is scheming to plunge the country into chaos in pursuit of a selfish and highly egocentric agenda.

Chief Obasanjo’s plot with others within and outside the country to thwart the general elections and foist an unconstitutional Interim National Government, which he hopes to head on the nation is well known to us, but by the Grace of God Almighty, his odious plan to return to power through the back door will fail woefully.

We know very well that it is in pursuit of this nefarious plot that the former President continues to sow the seeds of discord and crises in the polity by purporting to remain in the ruling party while openly consorting with the opposition, endorsing its candidates and predicting victory for opposition candidates in a manner most unbecoming of a supposed elder statesman. Thankfully, the vast majority of Nigerians who are patriotic and right-thinking cannot be fooled by Chief Obasanjo’s antics.

We urge them to be assured that President Jonathan's commitment to democracy in all its ramifications remains constant and that he will never be party to the use of any unlawful means to remain in office or gain political advantage over his opponents.

The President stands by his commitment, which he reaffirmed on national television last Wednesday that on his watch, all elections in Nigeria, will be free, fair and credible, and that all certified election results will be respected. As President Jonathan has also assured the nation, the rescheduling of the general elections was in the best interest of the nation and was never driven by any ulterior motive on the part of government as Chief Obasanjo and others have alleged.

President Jonathan will continue to put his best efforts into giving Nigeria quality leadership and will not be distracted from his purpose by unwarranted and needless criticism by persons who ought to know better.

The President also continues to trust in the good judgment of Nigerians and to believe that in appreciation of his sincere efforts to move the country forward over the past four years, they will re-elect him for a second term on March 28, 2015 with a mandate to pursue his agenda for national transformation to a successful conclusion.

EFCC arrest son of former Adamawa state gov, N15b allegedly found in his company accounts

Barely two weeks after he and his father, former Adamawa state governor, Murtala Nyako were declared wanted by the EFCC for financial impropriety while in government, the operatives of the EFCC yesterday  arrested Abdul-Aziz Nyako, the son of Gov Nyako in Gombe state , after N15 billion meant for the state was found in accounts of 5 companies allegedly owned by him.

Read the EFCC press statement on his arrest below

Barely two weeks after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, declared former Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako and his son, Abdul-Aziz, wanted, operatives of the anti- graft agency, this morning arrested the younger Nyako in Gombe, Gombe State. He was immediately flown to Abuja where he is currently being grilled by a crack team of detectives who had been working on the Adamawa investigation for several months.
Abdul-Aziz, who was declared wanted by the EFCC in the case of stealing, abuse of office and money laundering, is currently telling investigators all he knows about illicit funds traced to companies where he has interest.
Specifically, he will have to explain how over N15billion funds belonging to Adamawa State was laundered into the accounts of five companies owned by him-  Blue Opal Nigeria limited, Crust Energy Nigeria Limited, Blue Ribbon Multilinks Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Blue Ribbon Bureau De Change.
The funds was funned into the accounts of the companies from Adamawa State accounts domiciled in a new generation bank by the account officer who incidentally is the manager and an in-law to ex-governor Nyako.
The manager claimed he transferred the funds through verbal instruction from the former governor  for purposes which are not stated.
Investigations revealed that from 2007 to 2011 within Nyako’s tenure in office, before he was impeached in 2014, he had directed that all of the state owned accounts domiciled in various banks be transferred to the new generation bank .
Abdul-Aziz’s company, Blue Opal, is said to own, among other investments in Nigeria, an estate  in Abuja, while his father’s account officer owns several properties and investments scattered around Abuja, Yola and Kano.
Former governor Nyako is still on the run.

Election: NLC delegates trade punches, destroy ballot boxes

The National Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress ended in crisis on Thursday as participants failed to elect   a new president to succeed Abdulwahed Omar.

The election was progressing smoothly until some discrepancies were observed in the ballot papers.

The discovery led to allegations   that culminated in fisticuffs and throwing of chairs at each other by some of the delegates at the International Conference Centre, the venue of the conference in Abuja.

One of our correspondents gathered that some of the   delegates felt that the ballot papers were deliberately printed to facilitate the rigging of the election in favour of one of the candidates.

The candidates   are the NLC current National Treasurer, Ayuba Wabba; the Deputy President, Joe Ajaero, and the President, Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Achese Igwe who later stepped down.

Some of the ballot papers, according to some of the delegates,   had Wabba’s name   in three places and   Ajaero in two places. Others which did not   have Ajaeros name on them also   had no serial numbers.

The delegates from Igwe’s constituency, NUPENG,   were said to have called attention to the discrepancies in the ballot papers.

When the argument over the issue degenerated, some of the   delegates loyal to either Wabba or Ajaero,   started hauling chairs at each other, thereby causing pandemonium at the venue. Others seized and destroyed   the ballot boxes.

Wabba seemed to have a brighter chance of being elected   the next President of the congress   until Tuesday when   Igwe, who is also the NUPENG President, stepped down and declared   support for Ajaero.

Delegates loyal to Ajaero are of the view that the organisers of the election may have allowed deliberate errors in the ballot papers to pave the way for the election of Wabba.

The leadership of the congress has however called a meeting of the National Administrative Council   to decide on how to solve the crisis.

Our correspondent, who was at the Labour House Headquarters of the NLC in Abuja, observed that the meeting was ongoing as of the time of filing this report.

With the outcome of the delegates conference, the NLC appears to be heading for a major division.

Investigations reveal that MHWUN, the NUEE and NUPENG contributed N423m, N320m   and N159m, respectively to the congress between 2011 and June 2014.
