The popular Madam Tinubu Hall, MTH, was gutted by fire in the early hours of today after a student used a hot plate to cook and put it under her bed without totally putting out the heat. The fire started from the room and spread to other rooms but thankfully no student was killed. A few of them were however injured when they tried to jump from their windows to escape the fire.

The saddest part of it all was that students had to resort to using pure water to put the fire because there was no water in the hostel.

Dangers of Indecent Dressing for our Young Ladies -Ruth Choji( Leadership )

Piety and reverence is typically synonymous with modesty. But today, caution seems to have been thrown to the wind as indecent dressing, even in places of worship, has become a trend.

Clergies are beginning to express fears over the spate of indecent dressing in churches, especially by ladies. This phenomenon, that was once alien to Africa, is gradually becoming a norm and is contributing to the increase in the rate of immorality and other ills plaguing the society.

The ugly act has taken a dangerous dimension in the society with young ladies often found in attires that reveal their body anatomy inside out. To many, the dressing pattern is suggestive of something. More embarrassing is the fact those dresses are largely transparent.

Because of this, in 2008, the then chairman, Senate Committee on Women and Youth, Senator Eme Ufot Ekaete, presented a bill on indecent dressing on the floor of the senate titled, “An Act to Prohibit and Punish Public Nudity, Sexual Intimidation, and Related Offences”. The bill proposed a jail term of six months for offenders. But humanitarian organisations condemned the bill.

Reacting to the said bill, Anita Kyaagba, an undergraduate stated: “We are living in a free world and so, we are free to wear anything we want. Besides, since you don’t buy the clothes for me, who are you to tell me what to wear? I wear what makes me comfortable. As a young girl, I follow fashion trend, I wear the best in vogue and if it accentuate some parts of my body, and my boyfriend likes it, I don’t see anything wrong in it”.

Adefunke Olutoye, another student who spoke to LEADERSHIP stated that she had to stop attending a church in which she grew up because the ushers stopped her from entering inside one Sunday because of what she was wearing. According to her, “I wore a mini gown which highlighted my hips and boobs and the ‘old-fashioned’ usher refused to allow me enter the church. Since then I decided to join another church that won’t judge me based on my dressing, but my heart. Besides, the Lord sees the heart, not the body, so, why should anybody judge me”?

On her part, a retired school principal and mother of five, Mrs Hilda Kumbin stated that:
“It is unfortunate that standard has fallen in the society and parents are not helping because they don’t have time for their children. There are many reasons why young girls come out in indecent dresses but the most important I think has to do with self-esteem. When a young girl feels inadequate, lacking in self-confidence, she will do anything to draw attention to herself and wearing indecent clothes could be her way of doing that. They forget that for every action, there is a reaction and that is why we have series of cases like rape.

"Most young women have fallen victims to rape because of the provocative dresses they put on. I believe that, indecent dressing debases womanhood because it tends to expose parts of the woman’s body that forms her treasure. Any man that will come after her will only be doing so out of lust, and just to devour what she has displaced for him. Even if you are decent but decide to wear indecent clothes, people will insult you”, she said.

Continuing further, she said, “A girl’s behaviour is often influenced by the type of training and grooming she gets. It has become necessary to establish guidelines for parents and students on acceptable mode of dressing. The National Assembly must enact a law that will regulate dressing in the society. I like what some schools like University of Abuja and Nasarawa State University, Keffi are doing on indecent dressing. Government must ban unscrupulous music videos and films, while parents must discourage their children from such dressings. In the same vein, teachers must discourage this madness. Young people must know that indecent dressing do not improve their beauty, rather, they dent their image and it also symbolises rebellion and immorality, ending in molestation”, she cautions.

Also, Mr Peter Abbass, a Psychology lecturer in Nasarawa State Polytechnic stated: “I think it‘s time a course on immorality or indecent dressing is introduced in schools. I think it is low self-esteem that is making young girls to dress indecently. It makes them believe that they have to do something, sometimes improper to be noticed, this is to fill an emptiness in their lives. They are not contented with their abilities and beauty.

"These young girls see other ladies dressing that way and because men chase after such girls, the girl with very low self-esteem will want to join them to get the same attention. One thing about indecent dressing is that it attracts attention; whether it is a negative or positive one, the bottom line is that it attracts attention. People must stare and automatically, such a person is noticed. So, when a girl who feels insecure wants to be noticed, she resorts to indecent dressing.

"Indecent dressing portrays our society and institution as immoral, if it’s in the church, it portrays the pastor as weak and not spiritually sound. Parents and adults must dress well and honourably as an example for younger generations. The mass media should promote good moral values and religious leaders must strongly preach against indecent dressing because you will be addressed by the way you are dress,” he said.

For Pastor John Ishaku, Christian parents must teach their children how to dress decently because that is what the Bible says. “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becomes women professing godliness) with good works.” So it is a command from the Bible. It is a sin for a lady dressing half naked to walk in the street or come to church”.

Mallam Yahaya Abdulaziz, a Muslim cleric also stated that, “No good Muslim woman will dress indecently because it is clearly written ‘Tell the believing men that they shall subdue their eyes (and not stare at the women), and to maintain their chastity. This is purer for them. God is fully cognizant of everything they do'."

Another Deadly Virus Surfaces- Marburg Haemorrhagic Fever (MHF)

With West Africa, and indeed the rest of the world, still reeling from the deaths brought about by the Ebola virus, the recent death of a Ugandan hospital technician of another deadly viral disease, Marburg Haemorrhagic Fever (MHF), has brought fresh fears, Tribune Newspaper reports.
Uganda’s Ministry of Health disclosed that a total of 99 people who had been in contact with the victim had been moved to quarantine. These contacts are being monitored for signs and symptoms of the disease after tests confirmed that the 30-year-old man who worked as a radiographer in a Kampala hospital died of the disease. The man was said to have had a headache, abdominal pains, diarrhoea and vomited blood before he died.
Marburg virus was first identified in 1967, after simultaneous outbreaks in Marburg (from which the disease takes its name) and Frankfurt both in Germany, Belgrade, Serbia and Yugoslavia. It was later traced back to monkeys imported from Uganda for laboratory work. Since then, the virus has appeared sporadically, with just a dozen outbreaks on record. The most recent outbreak, also in Uganda, in 2012, killed four out of 15 patients, according to the United States of America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

American ERs prepare for Ebola cases and false alarms- Jen Christensen and Mariano Castillo

(CNN) -- An ambulance ride in New York City on Friday was yet another reminder.

Emergency rooms around the United States are gearing up for Ebola patients -- and for people who think they have the deadly virus.

The Brooklyn patient had Ebola like symptoms, the New York Fire Department said. The teen, who had just returned from the African country of Sudan, the New York Daily News reported, is undergoing tests.

The Ebola outbreak is on the other side of the continent, as far away as Atlanta is from Los Angeles, but fear of the disease has bred caution.

The outbreak has been limited to West Africa while Sudan is in North Africa.

Worry raises hospital visits

"I have seen several people who had acute illnesses worried that they may have Ebola," said Dr. Mark Reiter.

He works as an emergency room doctor in Tennessee. He's also president of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Reiter says patients in his state are unlikely candidates, not having been to West Africa, nor having had any contact with a symptomatic Ebola patient.

"But it has gotten a tremendous amount of media coverage and some people are especially concerned about it, even if it is highly unlikely," Reiter said.

Emergency rooms typically see a small uptick in traffic after a disease has been in the news a lot.

A 2010 study that looked at emergency room traffic when swine flu was in the news saw a 7% increase in emergency room visits.

Parents must also have been worried about their children catching it as pediatric visits increased 19.7%.

A recent Pew study showed 21% of respondents are somewhat worried about Ebola and their personal health.

Outbreak is in Africa

The death toll in the Ebola outbreak is 4,033, the World Health Organization reported. There are 8,399 cases.

The numbers were reported from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Spain and the United States.

But there have been only a smidgen of cases in the latter two.

A total of 416 health care workers fighting the outbreak in Africa are among those believed to have contracted Ebola. Of those, 233 of have died, the WHO says.

American cases

An American aid worker who contracted Ebola in Liberia and overcame the virus was said to have become infected while treating Ebola patients there.

Nancy Writebol was working with Samaritan's Purse in Liberia, caring for Ebola patients, when she became ill and was eventually transferred to an Atlanta hospital, where she recovered.

The belief has been that she contracted Ebola while working in a clinic with infected patients, but the survivor said that isn't necessarily the point of infection.

"Well, it's very possible that I contracted Ebola outside of the (medical) unit, not within," Writebol said. "Of course, I came in contact with people outside of our hospital, and I remember knowing and being with a gentleman one time that later died of Ebola. And it's possible that there was, you know, some contact there."

Writebol was released from Emory University Hospital on August 19, once doctors determined she posed "no public health threat."

Only one U.S. death

The sole person to be diagnosed with the virus on American soil, Thomas Eric Duncan, died this week, as new details of his hospitalization were revealed. He had traveled from Liberia last month.

On Friday, Duncan's nephew, Josephus Weeks, told CNN that Duncan had a 103-degree fever when he left the hospital, according to the discharge papers.

Weeks alleged that the fact Duncan was black, poor and didn't have insurance affected his care.

"Had that been another or another color, he probably would be living today, he would have survived it," Weeks said.

While it hasn't responded to these latest allegations, Dallas' Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital did issue a statement Thursday explaining and defending its treatment of Duncan.

He wasn't immediately given an experimental drug, because one wasn't available, the hospital said.

"His blood type was not compatible with the serum donors," making a blood transfusion impossible.

More than 50 people cared for him and a 24-bed intensive care unit was devoted to his care, the hospital said.

The Duchess could be back for duty! Pregnant Kate Middleton will finally return to the spotlight after announcing that she was expecting her second child with Prince William last month.
A rep for Kensington Palace tells Us Weekly that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to greet the President of Singapore and his wife during a royal engagement on Oct. 21. They will meet with their visitors on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, at the Royal Garden Hotel in London.

This will mark Kate Middleton's first official royal engagement since the Palace announced that the Duchess was pregnant with her second child. As was the case with her first pregnancy, she has been experiencing a severe form of morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum) in her first trimester.
The Duchess' health condition has forced her to cancel multiple royal engagements, including her planned first solo tour to Malta at the end of last month, as well as her brother-in-law Prince Harry's launch of the Invictus Games. Prince George's mother last pulled out of an event scheduled for this upcoming Monday, Oct. 13, when she had planned to visit Portsmouth, England.

Last Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Duchess was forced to cancel the launch of The Art Room's ninth center in the U.K. due to her illness. In her absence, Middleton wrote an apology letter to the center, which read: "I am truly sorry that I cannot be with you all today as you celebrate this milestone. As patron of The Art Room, I feel great pride to see the work that the charity is doing. Vulnerable children flourish in the safe havens that The Art Room provides; this highlights just how important it is to support children at a time when they most need help and support."
