THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT AND THE PERIOD OF SOCIAL NETWORKS – ODUNZE REGINALD C

Daddy “slap” me, I want to be on Face book, my mummy is on Face book, these are the words of three year daughter, the elder sister corrected her, it is not slap, it is snap. I laughed, and talked to myself that after all my money is not vain. But on second, I begin to imagine the impact of social networks on this generation.
Nothing is constant, only change is the constant thing. The business environment is becoming more and more complicated. Within a very  short time, we have moved from the period of cold war where Einstein’s  laws and postulations dominated,( Kiyosaki 2000;398)  for the students of physics, they will understand more on the laws and postulations of Einstein,  to the period  of globalization, where the world has been described as a global village.
We subsequently moved from the period of globalization to the period of  Moore” s law where the power of microchips doubles every three months , to the period of Hyper globalization, where it was stated that what affects one economy may definitely not affect the other as enunciated  in the world 3.0 mindset.
The clear nature of business environment manifested more clearly when the owner of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos, instantly became a billionaire by putting wall mart on line.
Where are now in the era of social networks, where social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn , instagram etc have made their owners instant billionaires.
What that portends is that organization has started realigning their corporate communication, Customer Relationship Management within the dictates of the business environment. What it means is that there are new professions, social media practioners ,social media managers and social media marketers.
The impact of the social media networks on business cannot be over emphasized, organizations, PR managers, advertising practioners have equally discovered that advertising in social media has more target audience and a better reached audience , more over it is cheaper and real time and it is also across the globe especially when organizations advertised through Google Ad word. The Google Ad word definitely target a larger audience and advert is tailored to the  motives and aspirations of the site and blogger for example a business site will attract business adverts on it,  a relationship site, will  attracts wedding planning adverts, women” s clothing’s etc.
The impact of these on business environment is that virtually every organization wants to be on Face book, Twitter, Pin crest, weibo, LinkedIn, the list could be endless as there more than 1000 social network sites, there is also the  YouTube especially for mass media. And that lead to an idea of having an anchor on those social media., as aggrieved customers hit these media to express their dissatisfaction, regret, misgivings about the organization, and it calls for swift response, as dissatisfied update, tweet or you tube upload can go viral.
Even militant are not left out as they hit social media to upload their latest exploits, while denouncing Americanism  but the irony of it is that virtually majority of  the social media networks are  all American companies. In a special report in 2003 by Business week captioned “The Best Global Brands”, Annual Ranking of the top 100 Brands. In a sub title “Brands in an age of Anti Americanism” the report stated and I quote” Park Young Hoon of Seoul was quick to clench his fist and yell slogans against George W Bush in a giant rally denouncing the US president’s tough policy on North Korea. The report went on to say “but that doesn’t mean the 33 year old Computer Engineer is willing to loosen his grip on his favorite American coffee or cola”
“Calling for political independence from the US is one thing and liking American brands is another” he says off course I like IBM, Dell, Microsoft, Starbucks and Coke”
The report also stated that “Yemeni students were out burning American flags, chanting kill the Americans noted by Valenti CEO of the Motion Pictures Association of Americans, as soon as the theaters open at 7pm, bingo, they are all there”.
In my article on the power of branding, I opined “ the popular Islamic fighters also stated that they are against western education, but bingo, they are carrying the latest assemblage of state of the art weapons and ammunitions which are the products of foreign countries  , they are also  uploading their videos, pictures of their exploits in You tube, and other social networks, the Islamic State militants  that killed the American In Iraq were busy castigating the Americans, yelling anti American slogans, but by evening they are communicating their exploits in Twitter, Face book and You tube. One thing is to hate a country, a society and another thing is to like its product or service.
That is the power of social networks, when Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Face book, pioneered Face book, the American discovered one thing, it gives them a data base of one third of the world, they decided to encourage him. And today virtually everybody is on Face book, getting about any person is by the click of the mouse, and recently you can’t update name in Face book especially if you have done that within six months.
Social Networks have changed the business environment and the social life of the world; people are easily connected by the click of the mouse, so also businesses are connected with the click of the mouse. But there are other issues in these social networks, like uploading of nude pictures, which Face book should look into as it evades people’s privacy.
I will say that we are now in the period of social networks, and until another period resurfaces, let us all remember, that as we click, give a status update, upload that beautiful pictures of ours, like and create a page for a cause Zuckerberg and other social network owners are busy smiling to the banks, But with the introduction of Netropolitan,  a social network for rich, where subscribers are expected to pay heavy amount of money and according to its website, it states that “ THE NETROPOLITAN CLUB is a global online community for affluent and accomplished individuals worldwide to socialize in a private and secure manner. Current total first-year fees to join Netropolitan are $9,000, payable at registration; subsequent annual dues are $3,000 a year“
There is Globallshare, where you  are expected to make money, if you subscribe free of charge during its formative time. There also the BB channel, whatsapp, google + , yahoo messenger, etc.
The youths are not left out as majority of them are using Pandora, in a research by The Atlantic, it noted that “Yes, it's a social network. Also: Just a third of high school seniors place a call each day, and more teens report using Pandora than Instagram or Snapchat” the research went on to say that  “Pandora is doing something very, very right, and it's still barely making money. Distributing music on the Internet, ladies and gentlemen: Great service, rough business”
What we need to do is to tap in to it and discovered how we can benefit from the gains of the social networks. And until another period resurfaces, we are right now in the period of social networks.

Ibrahim Babangida Back To Nigeria After Weeks Treatment

IMG_3267.JPG
Ex military ruler / President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida returned to Nigeria on November 1, 2014, Saturday, after almost two-months-long medical treatment in Germany.
His chartered flight arrived Minna International Airport at about 2.50pm. General’s son, Mohammed, daughter, Halimat, a grandchild, some close friends and associates, mainly senior retired officers, were at the airport to welcome him.
A short prayer session, led by his childhood friend, Alhaji Mohammed Tako, held shortly on arrival to thank Allah (SWT) for His mercies. IBB’s supporters prayed for his quick recovery, renewed strength and long life in good health.
The former leader of Nigeria appeared before the newsmen wearing a navy blue Kaftan with gray stripes and a cap to match. He looked healthy and in high spirit.
Journalists were not allowed to photograph the former leader of Nigeria, but everyone was eager to listen to him immediately, at the airport.
Babangida simply said: “Alihamadulillahi. I am coming up well. I am grateful to all Nigerians”.
He expressed his gratitude to all the Nigerians who were concerned about his state of health during the period of treatment. IBB also said he wanted to have some rest, before talking about politics.
“I am feeling better, I want to use this opportunity to appreciate all my compatriot Nigerians for the goodwill and gestures they expressed during my absence.
“I have been deeply touched by their (Nigerians) love and their affection and their prayers. I want to use this medium to thank each and every one of them.”
IBB further commented on his feelings the apprehension generated about his health while in Germany:
“The apprehension is no longer there, I thank Nigerians I am coming up well. Alihamdulillahi.”
Babangida was further asked about his ability to cope with the pressure which would be increasing ahead of 2015.
The veteran politician said he had been monitoring political events in Nigeria while in Germany, but he would be ready for a detailed talk after having enough rest.
“I missed all of you that welcome me, especially my local champions (journalists). I look forward to all of you to sit and chat with you and talk about politics as we always do. For now I want to rest.”
The renowned Nigerians spotted at the airport included the Minister of Defence General Aliyu Gusau, Air Vice Marshall Hamza Abdullahi, former FCT Minister General Halilu Akilu, former Director of Military Intelligence Col. Habibu Shuaibu, former Minister of Sports Alhaji Sani Ndanusa and former Niger State military administrator, Alhaji Umar Ndanusa.
The national chairman of National Democratic Party (NDP), Alhaji Hassan Jalo, the former Minister of Finance Alhaji Abubakar Muye and a Justice of Supreme Court, Justice Musa Datijo were also among those who received Babangida.
Babangida was driven home in a black BMW and arrived his Uphill residence at about 3.15pm.
It would be recalled that Babangida was flown to Germany on September 6, 2014, accompanied by his son Aminu. Initially a routine medical check-up has been planned for the ex Nigerian leader. However, IBB had to undergo a bone related-surgery, which required long recovery period and extended his duration of stay significantly.
President Goodluck Jonathan had allegedly paid Babangida a visit at the hospital, while on his way to New York, for the annual UN Assembly on September 21, 2014.

Linda Ikeji kept begging me after we broke up…I took her for granted’ – Dan Foster

IMG_3266.JPG
Popular Nigerian-based American On-Air Personality Dan Foster in a new interview with Punch has opened up on his affair with top blogger Linda Ikeji, why his 16 year old son is into drugs, and more, read below:
Do you have regrets coming down here?
The only regret I had was that in 1999, I had a son in the US. I had to go to my dad and I told him, ‘Dad, I think I like my job more than being married now. I would do anything for that job but then, I just met this woman and she just had a baby for me.’ He is now 16. I was mad at him last year. My ex sent me some of his pictures and I knew he was doing drugs. He had everybody fooled as if he was a cool kid. I feel so guilty because I am sitting here making all the money and I didn’t spend time with him. You have to spend time with your kids or you would lose them. Sometimes I would call him and he wouldn’t have anything to say. I would ask him how he was doing and he would just say ‘fine.’ I would scold him and tell him to say something more than one word. I would tell him to ask me questions and he would say he didn’t know what to say.
Did you ever smoke weed?
Yes. I remember one time I smoked weed and my father came in and asked me, ‘what is that stupid look on your face? You must have been smoking that stupid stuff because you look so stupid!’ I never smoked it again. But I was even 18. But my son was 14 when he started smoking weed. I was so pissed with his mum because she didn’t even know what he was doing. Now, I am trying to get his head together and make sure he does well in school. My only pain is that I needed to have been there for this kid. But I have three kids now and I love them to death.
Was your absence the major reason he did drugs?
I could have communicated more with him. He needs a role model. I spoke to my ex’s new guy and I asked him why he didn’t watch over him. He said he tried to talk to him. I told him I was annoyed with them. I told him I would have watched over the kid and found out who he was hanging out with. He told me he was hanging out with a white kid. But he is doing better now. He is communicating with me now.
Why did you marry a Nigerian?
My father told me that my ex had moved on. In fact, he told me then that she looked heavy. I asked what he meant and I was told she was pregnant. I knew she had really moved on. But then, I didn’t marry again till almost four or five years later. I was taking my time after that. It wasn’t something I wanted to jump into. But then, I did have so many options.
We knew you had options including Linda Ikeji…
Oh yeah! I remember Linda asking me what she did wrong. She went on and on. My wife always tries to delete her number no matter how I tag it on my phone. She would always figure the number out and she would find out what I use to code it. My wife is so strong and she is the right woman. I love her because she didn’t know who I was when I met her at the theatre. She still didn’t know who I was for almost two weeks after. We just had a great conversation. My sister kept asking me how I would find somebody that would love me for who I am. I put my wife to that test. She didn’t know me. It was two weeks later that people in her office asked her if she knew who her boyfriend was and they told her. She told them she didn’t know and she hadn’t even heard me on radio.
But Linda is doing well now; don’t you feel you should have married her?
She is a nice kid. I hope she is able to find someone but she has to find the right person. She is really into what she is doing. She is an honest kid. I thought I wasn’t good enough for her. I kept asking her why me. But she was really into me. I couldn’t believe it. I took her for granted. I felt she could always find a fine model on the runway. But she was so really serious about me. She was in love with me. But it didn’t work out. I took her for granted and I was dating another person while I was dating her. I tried to keep a relationship in Abuja, another in Warri while she was in Lagos. Ah! It was a nightmare. I wouldn’t want to go through that again. I had three beautiful women at a time and I lost them all. They were all waiting. One of them knew about all the rest. She could have been the one. I hurt her so badly. She even left the country after we broke up. I felt bad. I went to the cinema to get my head together on a Saturday morning and that was where I met my wife. See how God works. Look at my kids. They are wonderful children.
Do we see you going back to stay in the US?
One day, I have to. But my family went to the US recently. They saw my relatives. I didn’t go with them. I wish I went with them. I am still looking forward to that day to happen. We are hustling at the moment. We will do it at the right time. The US is a great place but a man needs to be where he is known. This is where my job is. We would visit and enjoy those places. I have made this place my home because my work is so relevant to me. My job is important. The satisfaction I get when I am working is big.
You have not mentioned anything about your mother
My mother died when I was 10. There was no mum around. It was just dad. I had a good relationship with my dad. In fact, it was the best. I talk about him a lot. He is full of wisdom. He sounds so clever. He started taking care of us when my mum died. My siblings are cool too.
You must have fully adapted to Nigerian system now.
I am trying. It is just that I see fish in everything I eat. I am allergic to sea food. How can somebody put fish in beans? It is just ridiculous.
