I Go to Beer Parlour every Friday to meet My People ––Fayose

Ekiti State has a unique governor, like it or hate it. Ayo Fayose has said he patronises drinking joints every Friday in order to get close to the ‘common man’ in the state.
Governor Fayose said this in Abuja on Thursday while defending the concept of 'stomach infrastructure' that was introduced by his government. He told journalists that it would be wrong to assume that stomach infrastructure meant only sharing of food and money to the people.
Fayose said, “I also go to beer parlour on Fridays to stay with the common men there. Governance is not church; it is about diverse characters and you must relate with them as such.
“Christmas is coming, why do people go out of their ways to be shopping or doing other things if it is not just to make people merry?
“So, I’m grooming chicken, buying rice, yams, plantain, and the rest of them. I am sure if I give them to families during the festive period, they will be happy. So, stomach infrastructure is a way of life.”

The governor said that most people who committed crime did so because they felt that life was no longer worthy of living for them and that there was no one to tell them that there is life for them.

He said it was because of this that he set up a department for stomach infrastructure and also appointed a special assistant and a personal assistant on it.

“So, my style, without apology, is that stomach infrastructure is a way of life for me, I will relate well with my people to alleviate poverty and hunger,” he added.

He said that the welfare of the people in the society mattered, hence his condemnation of spending N3.3bn on the building of Governor’s House by his predecessor, ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi.

“That is not to condemn or fight anybody but I have another instance, the University of Ado Ekiti has most of its courses yet to be accredited and they needed about N800m to sort out those problems, will the governor be living in affluence when the whole state is in darkness?,” he asked.

On the face-off between him and members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, the governor said he was already discussing with the speaker. He said the leadership of the House is ready to work with him.

He said, “I am an experienced governor and I know the game. Very soon, my House of Assembly will be together, working to keep the ground running; they want to work with me and I want to work with them.”

I Will Do Anything To Keep My Marriage ––Comedian AY

Popular comedian, Ayo Makun, speaks on divorce syndrome ravaging the entertainment industry and other issues with Punch's GEOFF IYATSE and he took up the issues very frankly.

When they celebrate wedding vows, the entire city seethes. Some take their ceremonies to the Middle East, Europe and America, making offshore wedding a symbol of prestige, to prove that no mountain is too tall for their love to cross. But within a short period, many a much-celebrated holy matrimony crumbles like a pack of cards.

But comedian AY has declared that he would do everything possible to save his marriage.
He said: “I revere marital fidelity and I believe if every couple can work at consciously making their homes work, there will be less sorrow in the land.”

To emphasise his devotion to his family, the comedian said he would not allow his tight schedules come between him and his commitment to building a blissful marriage with his wife, Mabel.

“The craziness of my schedule is indeed a challenge but it is my duty to make quality time for my wife and that is what I strive to do to keep the relationship continually fresh,” he continued.

We wish him and his wife continue to grow strong, irrespective of the challenges in today's marriages.

Regina Askia volunteers to work in Ebola center- my celebrity and i

IMG_5051.JPG
Former Beauty queen Regina Askia who is currently working as a nurse in America has volunteered to work in the Ebola centre that has moved to her building. She said that so far she is the only female nurse among her female colleagues who has volunteered. She is also receiving trainings on how to handle victims. Below is what she wrote on her facebook page;
“My job was looking for Nurses to volunteer for the Ebola center which was moved from our building to another location. My male colleagues said they would do it for 200 dollars per hour, ….C’mon Regina , gotta get on the team…they said. I was not smiling (I am captain of my 3 kid team). Not one female nurse volunteered (lol). We ALL had to demonstrate proper use of PPE equipment and be proficient with the Ebola protocol. I was full of thoughts as I watched the display, hoods, masks, gowns, boots….almost like a nightmare. Home news had it that Nigerians washed their hands, didn’t hug as much, monitored their temps and on the first signs of malaise drank the ORT (oral rehydration therapy) until symptoms passed. Were we once again trying to kill mosquitoes with bazookas? I wasn’t going to wait to find out. In a daze I got with the program to become “an Ebola ready Nurse”. More power to all the nurses on the grind – Goodluck!!”

Boko Haram Again: Kidnaps 60 Ladies in Adamawa State

It appears the on-going ceasefire deal between the Presidency and Boko Haram has finally collapsed with the reported abduction of a fresh set of Sixty Women by suspected members of the deadly Boko Haram sect at Waga Mangoro and Garta villages, both in troubled Adamawa State.

Forty of the women were said to have been abducted in Waga Mangoro and the other 20 were forcefully taken away from Grata, all in Adamawa.

Some of the fleeing residents from the area, who called journalists in Yola on the telephone lamented that scores of insurgents riding motorcycles and driving vans had invaded their towns.

The fleeing residents while lamenting the capture of the two towns, said they were able to sneak out of the captured towns on Tuesday, but disclosed that their villages were ravaged on Saturday.
One of those that was about to flee the area, Tizhe Kwada told journalists that the area had been under the control of Boko Haram for about two months now...

According to Punch, he said that though one of the attacked towns, Garta had been under what could be termed as the control of the insurgents for sometimes now, but that did not stop them from overrunning it and carting away the young women.

Kwada claimed that the insurgents cordon off the entire town and went from one house to another in Garta in search of young women who they took in their vans to an unknown destination.

He said, “The insurgents are still in the area. And they have slaughtered many men in Garta and abducted many young women. We also heard from residents of Wagga that they killed two men and took 40 women away from there.”

A community leader from Michika, a neighbouring town to the two attacked towns, Emmanuel Kwache, while confirming the incident to journalists in Yola on Wednesday said, “I got the information from villagers in the area that the rampage was still in progress.”

But when he was contacted, the Chairman of Madagali Local Government Area, James Watharda, said “I had all along been in Yola since the insurgents took over the area and as such I can speak little of happening in the area.”

Fayose blasts Fayemi over N50m beds for himself and his wife

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has accused his predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, of spending as much as N50m on beds in his and his wife’s bedrooms in the newly built Ekiti State Government House. He claimed that what was spent on two bedrooms, toilets and bathrooms was about N100m.

The statement titled “N3.3bn new Government House is Fayemi’s Show of Wickedness to Ekiti People,” was signed by his Special Assistant on Information and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka.

The statement described the new government house as an act of insensitivity to the plight of Ekiti people, many of whom, could not afford to feed once in a day.

No Ekiti person would see the “out-of-this-world luxury” provided with over N3.3bn borrowed funds for Fayemi, his wife and children and will not weep for Ekiti State and its people.
“Between Fayemi and his wife, what was spent on their bedrooms, toilets and bathrooms will be in the region of N100m. How can a responsible government use borrowed funds to provide this kind of luxury for the governor and his family alone in a state where a lot of people cannot afford to feed more than once in a day?
“People should ask the former governor what was really wrong with the abandoned governor’s lodge used by his (Fayemi) predecessors?" Check out more photos:

“Shouldn’t such funds expended on the hilltop edifice have been used to resuscitate the moribund textile factory in Ado-Ekiti that was turned to lock-up shops to provide employment for our teeming youths?

“Also, was Fayemi living in that manner of opulence before he became governor? Was he sleeping on a body-massaging bed and bathing in an electric-controlled Jacuzzi?

“Here is Fayemi, who could not pay workers salaries, owing them two-month salaries before he left. A Fayemi, who out of sheer wickedness refused to pay pensioners N2.4bn pension and gratuities; N400m workers leave bonus, N700m subventions to parastatals and tertiary institutions and remit N2.4bn four months’ cooperative society’s deductions from workers salaries preferring to use N3.3bn borrowed funds to provide luxury for himself, his wife and children alone.

“This is wickedness!’’

The statement quoted Fayose as being alarmed at the waste of Ekiti resources to provide comfort for a single family out of the thousands of households in the state.

It added, “The governor would have preferred to sell out the property and use the fund to provide basic amenities and employment opportunities for the people.”

The statement also alleged that Fayemi was planning to buy a helicopter if he had returned to office for a second term because the plan was for him “to run government from the comfort of Oke-Ayoba Government House and move from there to anywhere he wanted without the people seeing him.”

It added, “That’s also the reason he (Fayemi) refused to renovate the Governor’s Office, leaving it in a state of disrepair because he knew that he was not going to use the office during his second term."

Fayose, according to the statement, wondered “if the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whom Fayemi and his so-called progressives claimed as their role-model, lived in any government house, much less of building an Emperor-like house for himself.”

The statement added, “Fayose will prefer to live where Ekiti people can easily see him, touch him, eat with him and discuss the progress of the state together.

But Fayemi, through his media aide, Olayinka Oyebode, said the allegation was more about The Comedy of Errors. He advised Fayose to stop the theatre of absurd.
He said, “I have taken a guided tour of that place and I don’t think I have seen such an outcry. I don’t know where they got their figure from; it sounds absurd. I ‘ll advise them to stop this theatre of absurd. Governance is a serious business and I am appealing to them not to reduce it to a joke. They are turning Ekiti into a circus show and they should stop it. "

Kim Kardashian Ditches Bra, Flaunts Butt for Movie Date With Kanye West-Gabrielle Chung

Kim Kardashian's got back -- and in more ways than one. Going braless in a backless white top and booty-hugging jeans, the mom-of-one was spotted flaunting her signature curves while catching a matinee screening in Calabasas, Calif., with her husband, Kanye West, on Sunday. The twosome were seen catching a movie before -- gasp! -- hitting up a local Taco Bell drive-thru. (Because nothing says true love like splitting a Doritos Loco Tacos box.)

However, this wasn't the first time Kardashian ditched her bra for a date night with her man. Just a week ago, the reality star forgo the brassiere while -- unfortunately -- wearing sheer top during an outing with West.
Hey, if you've got it, flaunt it, right?

THE MAJOR KEY TO SUCCESSFUL RETIREMENT-ODUNZE REGINALD C

Image is credited Retiree Medical benefit Trust
Henry Ford said “Think you can, think you can’t , either way you will be right” and according to Robert Schuller 1988 “ I can ! Said the retired postman.  He was a rural mailman for twenty years” Schuller (1988:64)
But when retired after two decades of postal service in Makanda, Illinois Wayman has acquired a small pension and $1100 savings. His travel company does nearly $7 million in sales a year with Presley Tours. How does a retired mail man become a prosperous businessman and according to Schuler, he did it by believing in himself and his abilities and by making people happy. Schuller (op cited)
But in my own opinion Wayman succeeded because he was doing what he loves most, and he has a positive mental attitude. Positive attitude in life is that all that matters and secondly  doing whatever you have been assigned to do with dedication and happiness  irrespective of how much you are paid. According to research it has been discovered that people who continued whatever they spend many years doing are more likely to succeed than those who change vocation, job after retirement.
On how many people fail during retirement, is a function of their ability to kick starting whatever they are used to even on a smaller scale during old age. Old age comes with it issues, problems, non  acceptance , health issues and  a disconnect with current happenings in life, there is also the generation gap, and so doing what you love most or whatever you have been doing most is the key to survival. So a retired policeman, or army officer can comfortable operate a security outfit  and consultancy.
And how did Wayman arrived at that, “one day someone said to him” I would love to see the ocean. That simple wish enthusiastically  expressed to Wayman led to a tour of 546 people to Miami Beach , Wayman made $120  and had such a good time that he decided to go into business” Schuller op cited.
But from my interaction with retirees within my six years in pension industry, I want to believe that what drove Wayman was not the money but the actual sharing of one’s thought and deepest hopes fulfilled. And as Chinua Achebe will say the sharing  of one’s thought and deepest hope fulfilled can drive human beings to success. And the keen desire to return and do what he was doing before was the actual driving force for Wayman Presley.
It has been proved that people always wish for what they don’t have, I believe that Wayman was looking forward to his retirement during his working career but it did not take time for him to realize that he could have love going back to work may be after staying for the initial period of six months. That is the irony of life. The irony of life is that people tend to be what they are not, that is why you see the whites sun tanning and the blacks bleaching.

What this is indirectly saying is that within the working career ,work with zeal and dedication, know all that you need to know about the job, because you may never can tell, that you are indirectly  developing a business for yourself during old age.

In an article captioned “You may never retired” that appeared in wall street journal it states” that sum sizable number of retirees  may continue to work after retirement due to so many reasons like their pension pot  was not enough, they were ripped off  of the retirement savings and majority because they love what they do.

And according to Walter Updegrave in an article captioned “ Three Little mistakes that can sink your retirement,  which appeared in Yahoo Finance it states that “It’s almost become a cliché. Virtually every survey asking pre-retirees what they plan to do in retirement shows that the overwhelming majority plan to work. Indeed, a recent Merrill Lynch survey found that nearly three out of four people over 50 said their ideal retirement would include working. Which is fine. Staying connected to the work world in some way can not only offer financial benefits, it can also keep retirees more active and socially engaged”

But a more interesting story was the story of life of Mary Calendar, “Mary was making potato salad in an inn in Los Angeles during world war 11, her boss asked her to make pies for a large crowd. That was the start of a new career for Mary” Schuller (op cited). Continuing he stated that in 1948, she and her husband sold their car, to buy a refrigerator and an oven “in 1964 they open their first pie shop in Orange county and by 1986, they sold the family business about 115 restaurants to Ramada Inn Inc for $90 Million “What a tremendous accomplishment as that business may be hitting 2 billion Dollars in 2014.

Finally life during retirement is a great and rewarding life and what you make out of it is a function of the zeal, knowledge and experience, you acquired during your working career and when you are happy you are more likely to live long, and others will be jealous of your state and according to Dave Bernard in an article captioned “Finding Retirement state of mind”  which appeared in US News .he stated that “they appear to be genuinely happy with their state of affairs and making the most of each day. When you ask about their retirement experience they shine a genuine smile and are happy to regale you – often at length – about how wonderful it is to be in their shoes. Their happiness is infectious and you may find yourself caught up in their joy. Although it is safe to assume not everything is perfect in their world, their overall outlook is positive”. But when these are lacking, the retiree may likely not live long, thereby prompting others to fear retirement.

Liberia's President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf writes a heartfelt letter to the world

Dear World
In just over six months, Ebola has managed to bring my country to a standstill. We have lost over 2,000 Liberians. Some are children struck down in the prime of their youth. Some were fathers, mothers, brothers or best friends. Many were brave health workers that risked their lives to save others, or simply offer victims comfort in their final moments.
There is no coincidence Ebola has taken hold in three fragile states – Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea - all battling to overcome the effects of interconnected wars. In Liberia, our civil war ended only eleven years ago. It destroyed our public infrastructure, crushed our economy and led to an exodus of educated professionals. A country that had some 3,000 qualified doctors at the start of the war was dependent by its end on barely three dozen. In the last few years, Liberia was bouncing back. We realized there was a long way to go, but the future was looking bright.
Now Ebola threatens to erase that hard work. Our economy was set to be larger and stronger this year, offering more jobs to Liberians and raising living standards. Ebola is not just a health crisis – across West Africa, a generation of young people risk being lost to an economic catastrophe as harvests are missed, markets are shut and borders are closed.
The virus has been able to spread so rapidly because of the insufficient strength of the emergency, medical and military services that remain under-resourced and without the preparedness to confront such a challenge. This would have been the case whether the confrontation was with Ebola, another infectious disease, or a natural disaster.
But one thing is clear. This is a fight in which the whole world has a stake. This disease respects no borders. The damage it is causing in West Africa, whether in public health, the economy or within communities – is already reverberating throughout the region and across the world.
The international reaction to this crisis was initially inconsistent and lacking in clear direction or urgency. Now finally, the world has woken up. The community of nations has realized they cannot simply pull up the drawbridge and wish this situation away.
This fight requires a commitment from every nation that has the capacity to help – whether that is with emergency funds, medical supplies or clinical expertise.
I have every faith in our resilience as Liberians, and our capacity as global citizens, to face down this disease, beat it and rebuild. History has shown that when a people are at their darkest hour, humanity has an enviable ability to act with bravery, compassion and selflessness for the benefit of those most in need.
From governments to international organisations, financial institutions to NGOs, politicians to ordinary people on the street in any corner of the world, we all have a stake in the battle against Ebola. It is the duty of all of us, as global citizens, to send a message that we will not leave millions of West Africans to fend for themselves against an enemy that they do not know, and against whom they have little defence.
The time for talking or theorizing is over. Only concerted action will save my country, and our neighbours, from experiencing another national tragedy. The words of Henrik Ibsen have never been truer: “A thousand words leave not the same deep impression as does a single deed.
Yours sincerely,
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Anenih loses N500m libel suit against Oshiomhole’s CPS, TV station -Francis Onoiribholo

A High Court sitting in Benin City has dismissed a N500 million libel suit instituted by the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Anenih, against the Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor,Peter Okhiria, and the Edo State Broadcasting Service (EBS).
In a judgment delivered by Justice U.I. Erameh in consolidated Suits Nos: B/285/2010 & B/366/2010 between Chief Tony Anenih (CFR) as Claimant and Peter Okhiria (Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor), Edo Broadcasting Corporation and Bendel Newspaper Company Limited, who are the defendants, the court refused Ananih’s prayers to declare that a press release issued on behalf of the state government in 2010 was libelous and therefore refused the prayer for N500 million damages, among others.
Anenih had sued the defendants, claiming that a press release issued on behalf of the government by the Chief Press Secretary libeled him and sought N500 million in damages.
Justice Erameh, in her ruling, held that the defence of privileged occasion availed the first defendant (Okhiria) on the ground that he acted on the instruction of the Chief Security Officer of the state (the governor) to educate and inform the public on security happenings in the state and that such statement was made by the Chief Press Secretary in his official capacity as the spokesman of the government of Edo State, and as such, he could not be held liable for libel because the statements made on privileged occasion
are defence to libel.
The judge added that prior to the publication of the press release in issue in the consolidated suits in respect of the bomb scare incidence at  the premises of Edo State House of Assembly and Edo State Broadcasting Services,  there was serious  tension in the state over security, and as such the publication was necessary to keep the public abreast with the situation in the state.
The court, however, entered judgment against Bendel Newspaper Publishing Company Limited for failure to defend the suit.

Entertainers Are Going Into Politics Because Of Money – Clarion Chukwura

Clarioninterv
Veteran actress Clarion Chukwura is baring her thoughts on the fact that quite a number of Nigerian entertainers have showed an interest in being in Politics.
Nollywood names like Kate Henshaw, Kenneth Okonkwo, Desmond Elliot and more as well as music acts like Tony Tetuila, 9ice, Kenny St. Brown and comedian Julius Agwu have indicated that they will be vying for different political positions as against 2015.
In an interesting chat with Punch Newspaper, Clarion Chukwura states that the rush by Nollywood practitioners to join partisan politics is sheer hypocrisy. According to her, some artistes want to go into politics because they are not getting much money from their vocations.
She says, “The motive of those who are embracing partisan politics is purely monetary. Let us call a spade a spade. If you tell me that you want to go into politics to serve the people, I would want to look at your record first. I want to see what you have done to better the lives of the people in your immediate community. How many boreholes have you sunk in the community? How many hours of community service have you given for free over the last four or five years? How well are you known as somebody who yearns for improvement in social development?”
Do you think the entertainers are in it for the money or to make a change in Nigeria?

2face’s take on Artistes Who Flaunt Wealth on Social Media

IMG_4903.JPG
Despite his overwhelming success as an artiste, 2face’s humility and lack of show off is one of his most admired traits…Despite his status as one of Africa’s richest and most successful musician, you would never see him flaunting a designer shoe, watch or car..
When asked by Vanguard on his take on artistes who flaunt on social media, he said
“For me it’s a matter of choice. It’s a matter of what makes you happy. Some people have it and they don’t care to show it and some just do it so that people will think they have it. Some people do it so that armed robbers will come and visit them…
On the secret of his staying power
That question is difficult to answer, I think it’s people that will answer that aspect for me. But for me, I think it’s the talent , the grace of God and then the love and support of my fans.

Blake Lively was sporting something a little different on the red carpet Thursday night. At the 8th Annual Golden Heart Awards to support the charitable God's Love We Deliver in NYC, Lively showed off a gorgeous nude dress with purple embellishments and… her pregnant belly.
The former Gossip Girl actress, 27, announced earlier this month via her lifestyle website, Preserve, that she and husband Ryan Reynolds are expecting their first child.
However, she isn't worried about her new role. "I came from a big family ... a big family of Southerners," Lively told E! at the fete. "I feel like I've always sorta… I'm the youngest of five, so I never raised any siblings below me, but I'm always the person who's taking everyone else's kid and putting them on my hip, so I've kinda always been a mama."

Kristen who? Robert Pattinson certainly seems to have moved on. The actor was photographed with his new gal pal, FKA Twigs, in Paris on Tuesday.
The British singer-songwriter, whose real name is Tahliah Barnett, is currently traveling around Europe for her concert tour — and R. Pattz seemed quite happy to join her on the road in the City of Light.
The two were snapped spending the day in each other's company before her performance that night at La Maronquinerie. Pattinson looked scruffy but casual in a blue overcoat and brown wool hat while Twigs pulled her hair up in a messy bun and sported a denim jacket. Both wore sunglasses.
This isn't the first time the lovebirds have been spotted together. In September, photos of the couple holding hands in Venice Beach in Los Angeles surfaced, breaking Twi-hard fans' hearts everywhere.
The Maps to the Stars actor's love life had been in the spotlight after his messy split from his Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart in 2013, when photos of the actress kissing her married Snow White and the Huntsman director were published in Us Weekly.

But that was then. The hunky actor now seems besotted with his new flame. To prove he is the perfect date, the 28-year-old patiently stood outside the dressing room of a trendy Parisian boutique, Harmony, while Twigs tried on outfits. Aww.
"They were trying things on, making suggestions to one another, and he seemed to be really having a good time," a source told People. "He looks like he's really in love."
And though he's been romantically linked to other women since K.Stew, Us Weekly reports he has been the most serious about Barnett. "She's the first girl that Rob's really had feelings for since Kristen," said Us Weekly's insider. "It's a big deal for him. She's shown herself to be the kind of girl that he can see a future with."
Time will tell.

Heritage Confirms Full Payment For Enterprise Bank-Bukola Idowu

heritage bank
Heritage Bank’s investment arm, HBCL Investment Services told LEADERSHIP last night that it had paid the 80 per cent balance of N44.8 billion into the account of AMCON.
The bank confirmed the payment through its public relations agency, PR Redline. Lekan Isola, managing director of PR Redline, who spoke with LEADERSHIP in a phone interview confirmed the transfer of the balance into AMCON’s account from Heritage’s First Bank account.
AMCON’s spokesperson however told LEADERSHIP as at press time yesterday that the bad bank’s account was yet to be credited, although he added that transfers could take up to midnight to reflect.
The deadline had been extended by two days form the initial date of Monday, October 13 to Wednesday, October 15 to make up for the two days public holiday to mark Muslim festival, Eid-el-Kabir.
HBCL’s investment arm had emerged the preferred bidder for Enterprise Bank last week 15 months after the bank had been put on sale, and had signed the Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) with AMCON, paying off the initial deposit, two days before the September 21 date.
Heritage Bank, former Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria, had been announced as the preferred bidder over Fidelity Bank and 22 other interested investors by AMCON.
Heritage Bank bought the bank under its investment subsidiary, HBCL Investment Services Limited and would now acquire the entire issued and fully paid up ordinary shares of Enterprise Bank Limited, following the approval of the board of directors of AMCON.
The statement by AMCON noted that the emergence of HISL and Fidelity Bank as the preferred and reserve bidders respectively resulted from a rigorous and competitive bidding process, coordinated by its financial and legal advisers, Citigroup Global Markets Limited and Vetiva Capital Management Limited and G. Elias & Co.
Enterprise Bank commenced operation in August, 2011, as a full-service commercial bank with a national banking license, after it was nationalized and acquired by AMCON. The Bank operates via a sizeable distribution network of over 160 branches spread across major markets and commercial centres in Nigeria, and with over 177 ATMs, 57 Cash Centres and 2,000 POS terminals.

Buhari Declares for Presidency, Says Boko Haram is Ungodly-Chuks Okocha and Onyebuchi Ezigbo

 Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd)

• Presence of APC governors rattles Atiku
•PDP responds, welcomes former head of state to presidential race

Former military Head of State and three-time presidential contender, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), Wednesday formally declared his intention to enter the presidential race on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), promising to fight corruption and wipe out Boko Haram, which he described as “ungodly”.
Also Wednesday, THISDAY gathered that one of the presidential aspirants and former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, might have been rattled by the presence of APC governors at the Buhari declaration rally.
But a source at the Atiku media office has said Atiku's campaign team explained that the reason more leaders of the APC attended the Buhari declaration rally in comparison to the former vice-president’s, was because they were not invited so as not to compromise their neutrality.
Buhari, who was accompanied to the podium by four APC governors from Lagos, Rivers, Edo and Nasarawa States, said he was putting himself forward to contest for the party's presidential ticket.
“This is an occasion to celebrate our efforts and to resolve to continue until victory is won. I humbly wish to present myself before you, before all of Nigeria and before God seeking to be elected as APC’s presidential candidate,” he said.
The former head of state also used the opportunity to highlight his priority areas if elected president.
Among the areas, which Buhari said his government would give priority to, were the protection of lives and property, pursuing economic policies for shared prosperity and youth employment.
He said proper attention would be given to the provision of quality education for development, modernity and social mobility, agricultural productivity to ensure food security, adding that he would ensure that millions are out of poverty.
Other areas, which Buhari pledged to focus on, were the revival of the industries to generate employment, developing solid minerals exploitation, restoring honour and integrity to public service, and tackling corruption.
Lastly, the former head of state said he would respect the constitutional separation of powers between the executive, legislature and judiciary and respect the rights of citizens.
Buhari did not spare the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he said had presided over the country’s decline.
“Since 1999, PDP has presided over our country’s decline. Nigeria in my experience has never been so divided, so polarised by an unthinking government hell bent on ruling and stealing forever whatever befalls the country.
“Interference in the form of rigging which PDP government has practised since 2003 is the worst form of injustice – denying people their right to express their opinions. Whether they like it or not, injustice cannot endure,” he said.
Buhari paid tributes to Nigerians who have endured all kinds of difficulties, especially those facing the conflict and marauding insurgents in the North-east.
While expressing concern over the growing insecurity in the country, Buhari lamented the activities of the marauding murderers in towns and villages and armed robbers on the highways.
He nonetheless commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their efforts to deal with the insurgency.
“It is everyone’s duty to resolve and help the national effort to overcome these immense challenges. I would like us to place on record our appreciation for the efforts of our Armed Forces under a new leadership and police in confronting these challenges,” he added.
On the economy, he said the situation had continued to deteriorate while the agricultural and the industrial sector had all spiralled downwards.
On the power sector, Buhari said when PDP assumed power in 1999, Nigeria was generating 4,000MW of electricity, however, the situation has worsened.
“When PDP came to power in 1999, Nigeria was generating about 4,000MW of electricity. After 15 years and $20 billion spent, we are generating between 3,000MW and 4,000MW. No failure is more glaring than this,” he charged.
The former National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who was called to introduce Buhari, said one of the key priorities of APC would be to generate jobs for the teeming unemployed youths of the country.
He disputed the appellation that Buhari is a religious fanatic, saying the former head of state does not in any way manifest religious fanaticism or bigotry, stressing that Buhari could be trusted as an honest and selfless politician.
According to him, Buhari's interest is to come and stabilise the polity and step aside.
While welcoming party members and Buhari supporters to the event, the former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Silva, who chaired the organisation of the event, said amongst others that the country's economy needed proper intervention.
According to him, Buhari had shown in his lifestyle and past performance in government that he is the one to proffer solutions to the country’s problems.
Commenting on the notion that Buhari is too old to rule, he said age will not be an issue in the election because Buhari has a lot of experience and integrity to his advantage which other candidates are lacking.
Senator Olorunimbe Mamora from Lagos State also addressed the gathering on behalf of a group known as the National Elders of APC.
He said the wind of change was blowing and that come 2015 “we will have an APC government at the centre”.
He listed the problems of unemployment, poor power supply, decay in the education sector and insecurity as some of the biting problems that an APC government would tackle if voted into power.
Another stakeholder of the party and the Minority Leader in the Senate, Senator George Akume, spoke of the exploits of Buhari while he was the Petroleum Minister where he was able to manage the resources creditably.
A woman leader, Hajia Rabiu Ishaq, on her part, urged fellow women to support Buhari whom she said is the leader they can trust to ameliorate the plight of Nigeria women.
Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi said change was certainly in the air, adding that in the past, the opposition party could not boast of the present number of serving governors at its rallies.
“The governors have agreed to work together for change and whoever wins the party’s ticket, we would all join hands to campaign for him,” he said.
He said only APC could boast of an incorruptible personality like Buhari, adding that about N1.106 billion was spent by Rivers State to control the spread of the Ebola virus, while the president only gave the state a paltry N200 million and accused the federal government of politicising the disease.
He said APC has a firm grip on Rivers, Kano and Lagos States, adding that the party intends to adopt the strategy it used to win in Osun State during the 2015 general election.
Speaking on the failings of the country in the power sector, Amaechi said President Goodluck Jonathan had failed in his promise to deliver stable power supply in the country by 2014.
Buhari was driven into the arena at exactly 12.25 pm in an open roof sports utility vehicle (SUV) from which he waved to his supporters.
His frenzied supporters ran alongside the motorcade conveying him till he went into the VIP stand.
As early as midnight Tuesday, all the roads leading to the Eagle Square, Abuja, venue of the declaration rally, was swarmed with hundreds of his supporters who arrived the capital city in several convoys of buses.
Security men and party officials had a hectic time controlling the enthusiastic and near-fanatical youths who took over the entry points to the covered stands, waving and displaying campaign banners. The ecstatic supporters drummed and danced around the arena endlessly till the end of the programme.
Reacting to the calibre of personalities that graced Buhari's declaration, a source in the Atiku media office said the former vice-president viewed the presence of some governors of APC as something that may endanger their neutrality before the presidential primary
The source said Atiku had deliberately avoided extending invitations to the leaders of APC and the party's governors “because he didn't want to compromise their neutrality”.
He explained that since the party’s national leaders and the governors did not endorse any presidential aspirant, Atiku had no need to invite them to his declaration, which might send the wrong message.
Elaborating further, the source said since the party’s national leadership made it clear that they would create a level playing field for all presidential aspirants of the party, inviting any of them to Atiku's declaration could have led to the perception that they had endorsed him.
To avoid that controversy, the source said Atiku chose to make his declaration essentially a youth event, because they are the main victims of poverty and unemployment, critical agents of change and the focus of his agenda on job creation.
Another reason the source gave was that Atiku did not want to turn the event into a campaign rally as opposed to a symbolic declaration of intent to seek the country’s presidency in 2015.
Some of the leaders of APC who were at the event included Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, Edo State Governor Adams Oshiohmole, Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Bello Masari.
Others were the National Vice-Chairman of APC (North-east), B.D Lawal, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senator Ahmed Yerima, Senator Abba Buka Ibrahim, Silva, Muoghalu, Sharon Ikeazor, Alhaji Mustapha Habib, Osita Okechukwu, Hajia Hadiza Usman of Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG), Tony Momoh, Prof. Tamuno David-West, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, Oluwatayo Oluwa and Rotimi Akeredolu.
However, his rivals for the ticket of APC – Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Publisher of Leadership Newspaper, Sam Nda-Isaiah were absent from the vent.
Also reacting on Buhari’s entry into the presidential race, and his derision of the ruling party, the PDP said yesterday that it was pleased to welcome him to the 2015 contest, but debunked his assessment of the party and the Jonathan administration.
PDP said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh: “While we congratulate and wish him well in his ambition, we have noted some distortions and misrepresentation of facts in his speech and consequently wish to put the record straight.
“According to General Buhari, Nigeria was generating 4,000MW of electricity in 1999 but has today fallen short of that capacity under the PDP.
“The fact remains that as at May 29th 1999 when PDP took office, Nigeria was generating 1,600MW.  We urge Nigerians to fact-check this. Corroboration of this figure can also be sought from the World Bank, the IMF and multiples of other authoritative sources.
“In contrast, it is common knowledge that under the transformative leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria now generates 4,568MW of electricity, triple what was generated in 1999.
“Again, General Buhari stated that the growing economy which the PDP inherited in 1999 has been destroyed within 15 years in office. This also does not represent the reality on the ground.”
PDP said these facts could be verified from the handover notes of the military as well as from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), adding that at the time, Nigeria was the third largest economy in Africa, behind South Africa and Egypt.
PDP also said the nation was rated number 48 in the world in terms of its foreign reserves which stood at $3.6 billion while its foreign debt stood at $36 billion.
Metuh said it was incontrovertible that in the last 15 years of PDP leadership, especially the last three years of dynamic and purposeful administration provided by Jonathan, Nigeria's economy has become the largest in Africa and the 26th largest in the world.
“Similarly, our foreign reserve now stand at over $39 billion and our foreign debt reduced to less than $7 billion from $36 billion,” he said.
Besides, the ruling party took on Buhari on Nigeria’s agricultural sector, saying his statement did not reflect the reality on the ground.
“Verily, the fact remains that in the last 15 years under the PDP, indeed, in the last three years of vigorous application of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda, there has been an unparalleled government input in agriculture, thereby pushing production to an all time high. Moreover, Nigeria food importation has reduced from N1.1 trillion in 2010 to N684 billion.
“While we understand that the APC is hell bent on using every opportunity at its disposal to discredit the PDP in its quest for political control, we urge their handlers to always cross-check their facts and stop making a mockery of respected Nigerians in the mould of General Buhari.
“Finally, the PDP again welcomes General Buhari into the presidential race and hopes that in the future, he will not allow himself to be further embarrassed in the course of his campaign,” the PDP said.

Dallas nurses cite sloppy conditions in Ebola care- MATT SEDENSKY and MARTHA MENDOZA

FILE - This undated file image made available by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows the Ebola virus. A Texas health care worker who provided hospital care for Thomas Eric Duncan, who later died has tested positive for the virus, health officials said Sunday Oct. 12, 2014. Dr. David Varga, of the Texas Health Resource, says the worker was in full protective gear when they provided care to Duncan during his second visit to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. .

DALLAS (AP) — A Liberian Ebola patient was left in an open area of a Dallas emergency room for hours, and the nurses treating him worked for days without proper protective gear and faced constantly changing protocols, according to a statement released late Tuesday by the largest U.S. nurses' union.
Nurses were forced to use medical tape to secure openings in their flimsy garments, worried that their necks and heads were exposed as they cared for a patient with explosive diarrhea and projectile vomiting, said Deborah Burger of National Nurses United.
Burger convened a conference call with reporters to relay what she said were concerns of nurses at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where Thomas Eric Duncan — the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S. — died last week.
RoseAnn DeMoro, executive director of Nurses United, said the statement came from "several" and "a few" nurses, but she refused repeated inquiries to state how many. She said the organization had vetted the claims, and that the nurses cited were in a position to know what had occurred at the hospital. She refused to elaborate.
Among the nurses' allegations was that the Ebola patient's lab samples were allowed to travel through the hospital's pneumatic tubes, opening the possibility of contaminating the specimen delivery system. The nurses also alleged that hazardous waste was allowed to pile up to the ceiling.
Duncan died Oct. 8, and the hospital said Sunday that one of his nurses had tested positive for Ebola. She is hospitalized and was listed Tuesday in good condition.
Wendell Watson, a Presbyterian spokesman, did not respond to specific claims by the nurses but said the hospital has not received similar complaints.
"Patient and employee safety is our greatest priority and we take compliance very seriously," he said in a statement. "We have numerous measures in place to provide a safe working environment, including mandatory annual training and a 24/7 hotline and other mechanisms that allow for anonymous reporting."
He said the hospital would "review and respond to any concerns raised by our nurses and all employees."
The nurses alleged that:
— Duncan was kept in a non-isolated area of the emergency department for several hours, potentially exposing up to seven other patients to Ebola;
— Patients who may have been exposed to Duncan were kept in isolation only for a day before being moved to areas where there were other patients;
— Nurses treating Duncan were also caring for other patients in the hospital;
— Preparation for Ebola at the hospital amounted to little more than an optional seminar for staff;
— In the face of constantly shifting guidelines, nurses were allowed to follow whichever ones they chose.
"There was no advance preparedness on what to do with the patient, there was no protocol, there was no system," Burger said.
Even today, Burger said, some hospital staff at the Dallas hospital do not have proper equipment to handle the outbreak.
"Hospital managers have assured nurses that proper equipment has been ordered but it has not arrived yet," she said.
The nurses' statement said they had to "interact with Mr. Duncan with whatever protective equipment was available," even as he produced "a lot of contagious fluids." Duncan's medical records, which his family shared with The Associated Press, underscore some of those concerns.
Almost 12 hours after he arrived in the emergency room by ambulance, his hospital chart says Duncan "continues to have explosive diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and projectile vomiting." He was feverish and in pain.
When Ebola was suspected but unconfirmed, a doctor wrote "using the disposable shoe covers should also be considered." At that point, by all protocols, those shoe covers should have been mandatory to prevent anyone from tracking contagious body fluids around the hospital.
A few days later, however, entries in the hospital charts suggest that protection was improving.
"RN entered room in Tyvek suits, triple gloves, triple boots, and respirator cap in place," wrote a nurse.
The Presbyterian nurses are not represented by Nurses United or any other union. DeMoro and Burger said the nurses claimed they had been warned by the hospital not to speak to the media or they would be fired. They did not specify whether the nurses making the claims were among Duncan's caregivers.
The AP has attempted since last week to contact dozens of individuals involved in Duncan's care. Those who responded to reporters' inquiries have so far been unwilling to speak.
David R. Wright, deputy regional administrator for the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which monitors patient safety and has the authority to withhold federal funding, said his agency is going to want to get all of the information the nurses provided.
"We can't talk about whether we're going to investigate or not, but we'd be interested in hearing that information," he said.
CDC officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Duncan first sought care at the hospital's ER late on Sept. 25 and was sent home the next morning. He was rushed by ambulance back to the hospital on Sept. 28. Unlike his first visit, mention of his recent arrival from Liberia immediately roused suspicion of an Ebola risk, records show.
The CDC said Tuesday 76 people at the hospital could have been exposed to Duncan after his second ER visit. Another 48 people are being monitored for possible exposure before he was hospitalized.
