Matthew McConaughey hasn't forgotten his roots.
The Texas native is an Oscar winner with dozens of movies on his
résumé, but he has repeatedly given nods to his debut film, 1993's
Dazed and Confused.
The most recent was on Friday when he arrived for the Austin City
Limits music festival wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a memorable line
spoken by his character, David Wooderson, a ladies' man who's graduated
but still hangs around with high school students.
Of course, McConaughey, 44, regularly pays tribute to a couple of
other famous lines from the Richard Linklater flick. His catchphrase,
"all right, all right, all right," was first uttered by Wooderson.
The actor even named his
Just Keep Livin Foundation
— an organization aimed at helping high school students make empowering
choices — after another snippet of dialogue. According to the
nonprofit's website, "While filming
Dazed and Confused, Matthew
McConaughey was struggling with the passing of his father. It was
during this time that he was overtaken by a saying that would soon
change his life: 'just keep livin' or 'j.k. livin' as it’s called. As
life continued forward, he found that the just keep livin approach
helped him navigate through the good times and bad times, stay true to
his ideals, and make the best out of this adventure we call life."
That memorable line? "The older you get, the more rules they are
going to try and get you to follow. You just gotta keep on livin', man.
L-I-V-I-N."
Shirts with the laid-back star's philosophy are available online, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting his foundation.
